CLASS ASSIGNMENT: PROGRESS REPORTS

Progress reports are written to provide information about the way a project is developing. They provide accounts of expenditures made in terms of time and money, as well as give those involved in the project an estimate of the amount of work completed and the remaining work to be completed. Successful progress reports answer the following questions:

How much has been accomplished since the last report?
Is the project on schedule?
If not, what went wrong? How has the problem been corrected? How long will it take to get back on schedule?
What else needs to be done?
What is the next step?
Are there any unexpected problems (other than schedule problems)?
When do you anticipate completion?

As progress reports are internal documents, they are written in memorandum format. Always format for the reader using headings such as these:

Work Completed
Work in Progress
Work to be Completed or Remaining
Date of Completion
Complications

Use additional or alternative headings as needed.
