ASSIGNMENT:
EXPANDED DEFINITION
Chapter 11 in Burnett explains informal, formal,
operational, and expanded definitions. To prepare for this assignment
complete #5 on page 350.
Expanded Definition Paper
The expanded definition paper will be similar
to the fugue example we worked on for homework in that it will incorporate
various types of definitions and visuals, as they are appropriate to your
audience.
- Choose a term that requires expansion
for a specific audience. Write a one sentence formal definition of
the term including term, genus or classification, and differentia.
- Prepare a detailed audience and use analysis
in narrative form. In your audience and use analysis identify the
technical level of the reader, the use the reader will make of the
definition, i.e. why your identified reader requires this expanded
definition.
- In two typed pages define your term using
appropriate expansion strategies as described in Burnett, chapter
11.
- In pen, in the margin of the final draft,
label the strategies and types of definitions used, as we did in the
warm-up exercise on the fugue.
- To develop this paper you are required
to conduct secondary research; use a minimum of four sources. Photocopy
sections of secondary research used within the paper.
- Using the citation style appropriate to
your discipline (ask professors in your field and check manuscript
requirements in technical journals in your field for citation style
information), prepare a reference sheet for all sources. Check my
Web Page for online documentation information.
The final portfolio will include: all prewriting,
photocopies of source material marked / highlighted where specifically
used, audience and use analysis, expanded definition labeled with strategies,
reference sheet.
