A tradition of excellence

UMBC--a major research university in the Baltimore-Washington area--offers graduate students an exciting environment for advanced study.

With 9,101 undergraduates and 1,658 graduate students in the liberal arts and sciences, engineering, and public policy, UMBC is large enough to provide students with excellent training and research experience and small enough for close student-faculty interaction.

The University is a growing center for research and development and technology commercialization. Campus research grants and training contracts have topped $80-million, up from just $10-million nine years ago. Patent applications by UMBC researchers have more than quadrupled in the past three years and more than 125 University-developed technologies are available for licensing. Adjacent to the campus, The UMBC Technology Center houses private research, development, and training organizations seeking interaction with University faculty, students, and research facilities.
The quality and extent of scholarly accomplishments by UMBC faculty are impressive. From 1996 to 2000, the approximately 300 faculty members at UMBC have published a total of 300 books and over 4000 journal articles and other creative works. They have also made over 3100 professional presentations of their research work locally, nationally and internationally.
