Solaris 2.x Things to Live by

• Things to do when adding a new disk. Look at the file /kernel/drv/sd.conf.
• Memory utilization (top for Solaris). Check out eecs.nwu.edu:/pub/top/top-3.3beta3.tar.gz. It works for Solaris 2.1 and above. You may want to apply a patch to make it work for multiprocessor boxes. Patch is with vijay@umbc.edu
• Word from Sun regarding printing in Solaris 2.x.
• Patch tips and tricks. When upgrading to 2.2 you needed a virgin system or you needed to backout the patches beforehand. (And you needed to save the old files)

  When upgrading to 2.3, the patches wouldn't be backed out. Instead, the package instances installed by pacthes are removed (in principle, this only modifies /var/sadm/install/contents).

  After upgrading, the pathc directories where removed (only those that had been superceded by the upgrade, not, e.g., compiler patches.)

• To avoid having to set the time and date on an autoinstall, you need a timehost alias in your NIS/NIS+ host maps and you need a timezone map/table (format is Timezone Domainname).
• To allow chown, the _POSIX_CHOWN_RESTRICTED option must be cleared. To set this:
  

  Edit /etc/systems:
  
          set rstchown = 0
  
  Reboot.
  

• Setting up printers.
  

  
          SERVER=...
          SERVER_TYPE={bsd|s5}
          PRINTER_NAME=...
  
          lpsystem -t $SERVER_TYPE $SERVER
          lpadmin -p $PRINTER_NAME -s $SERVER -I any
          accept $PRINTER_NAME
          enable $PRINTER_NAME
  

  This is *very* easy to roll into a script where you just create a list of SERVER/SERVER_TYPE/PRINTER_NAME triplets.

• To rename a system do:
  
  • hostname <newname> should do it. For various subsystems, and other machines to know about it, look at:

    /etc/aliases
    /etc/auto_home
    /etc/hostname
    /etc/hosts
    /etc/nodename
