Subscribing to discussion and news groups

There is a large number of electronic mailing lists available on the Internet, through which people discuss topics of interest:

  1. E-Mail Discussion Groups gives a brief description of how these lists work and how to subscribe to them, as well as a listing of available discussion groups.
  2. There also is a page related to mailing lists at UMBC.
  3. Tile.net/listserv is a reference list to all the LISTSERV discussion groups on the Internet.
  4. Yahoo also has a page related to mailing lists.
  5. Publicly accessible mailing lists is a hypertext index of mailing lists.
In general, you would find the name of mailing list that your are interested in (i.e. EDUCATIONAL-RESEARCH) and the e-mail address of the listserv (i.e. listserv@asuvm.inre.asu.edu). You would join this group by sending the message "sub EDUCATIONAL-RESEARCH your name" to listserv@asuvm.inre.asu.edu.

There is also a large number of electronic news groups available on the Internet, related to specific topics of interest. You access these directly through Pine by going to "FOLDER LIST - Select a folder OR news group to view", opening this, tab to "News-collection - [ Select Here to See Expanded List ]", and type "A" for subscribe, and "Ctrl-T" for all groups. A list of all available news groups will appear; of educational interest are the K12-groups and some other subject-related ones. The World Wide Web Consortium gives a similar list of all the news groups with a brief description of each.
