Telnet (remote login) allows you to use programs stored on other computers on the network. For instance, if you would want to access your computer account at UMBC from your computer at home through a modem, you would use this application to connect to your account. For more information, see some of the suggested reading or go to Network communications at UMBC.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) allows you to exchange (send and receive) files (such as documents, graphic images, or software) with other computers on the network. For more information, see some of the suggested reading or go to UMBC's FTP-information. Nowadays, however, a lot of the file transfer takes place easily with software such as LAN Workplace or through the Internet. For instance, you can use rapid filer to copy files from your hard drive or floppy disk to your unix account and vice versa. This is important for sending or receiving attachment files with an e-mail message. Go here for a brief tutorial.

Netscape is the software that you have been using to access the Internet. There are several features available that make your life on the Internet more convenient.

  1. Using the "File - Save as" command, you can save the current page or document to a file on the hard drive or floppy disk.
  2. Using "Bookmarks", you can create a list of your favorite or most frequented Internet links.
  3. Using the "Options - Preferences - Autoload Images" command, you can turn off the automatic loading of images (which will increase the speed with which documents are loaded on your screen).
  4. Using the right button of your mouse, there are a number of options available, for instance the possibility to save an image in the current document to the hard drive or a floppy disk.
