EDUC791C: Instructional Technology

Welcome to the Instructional Technology page of the Education Department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. It is the main page for the 1-credit practicum course EDUC791C: Instructional Technology.

"This course is designed to provide the student with practical experience in observing and analyzing teaching practices and learner development. The student will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of how research and theory affect practice in the classroom by applying basic instructional principles in a carefully supervised setting" (from the Graduate School Catalog).

The emphasis in this particular course will be on instructional media and instructional technology. Through several kinds of activities and experiences, you will demonstrate your understanding of the appropriate use of media in education and your ability to use and manipulate the technology components related to these media for instructional purposes.

Most of the course is self-guided in the sense that you can browse the subjects and complete your assignments at your own convenience. If you are relatively new to computers, go to the tutorial first.

The course covers the following topics:

  1. Using e-mail
  2. Subscribing to discussion and newsgroups
  3. Accessing the internet
  4. Resources for you, the teacher (Gradebooks, wordprocessing, databases, spreadsheets, CD-ROMs)
  5. Resources for your students
  6. Using the computer in your classroom

This course is paperless; all documentation and materials are available electronically. As such, there are no textbooks. However, the following documents are suggested reading:

  1. Zen and the Art of the Internet
  2. Internet Web Text
  3. Technology Planing Guide Excellent for those desiring to bring technology into their schools.

Assignments are to be "handed in" by electronic mail. For that reason, it is important that you sign up for an account at no charge to you. The package that you want to use for e-mail is called Pine.
