Signing up for an account

Under the current system, accounts are generated using an on-line account registration process. Student accounts are validated against the campus enrollment database. It is possible, and in fact likely, that entries for some persons will be missing from one of these databases. This may occur because they were enrolled after receipt of the data. While timely updates will be obtained, the files cannot be totally current. If you encounter problems registering for an account, please go to ECS room 012. A student computer operator will assist you in resolving your problem.

You may use any ACS computer workstation (both Mac and Windows-based) to register, or you may Telnet to node UMBC8. At the login prompt, the response should be register (no password is required yet). This will invoke a program which prompts you for your SSN. Once validated, you can choose the accounts wanted. You may select a Unix account, a VMS account, or both (although for this course it is recommended you register for a UMBC8-account. When the program is exited, a printout will be generated at the ACS printer station, ECS room 019, where it may be retrieved. The printout will show the assigned account username(s) and password(s). You are required to produce a photo identification and to sign a form regarding appropriate use of computers and facilities before receiving your accounts.
