Dear Amalie!
Some time ago I received a letter from brother Gustav with an
enclosure from Ferdinand, in which he demands his money in a certainly
uncalled for manner; Gustav thus asks if it's my turn to send
the 10 dollar grant.
I wrote that I had sent 10 dollars in either June or Juli, and
since Hugo, as well as Theodor, is probably in no shape to make
these payments on a regular basis, I suggested to Gustav that
the both of us should alternatingly send 10 dollars each quarter
for the next few years. I believe in any case that Gustav is the
one with the biggest means, also has only one daughter, who is
taken care of, and that he is in the best position to suppoert
you. Since I didn't receive an answer to my letter, I asked again,
and received the news today that he sent 5 dollars, but nothing
further on how he took to my suggestion. I now send you 10 Dollar
for the Christmas quarter and ask you or Ferdinand to write to
Gustav once more, so that he agrees to my proposition. Of course,
Ferdinand must not write in the same tone of voice as his last
letter. Ferdinand knows that all of us have lost enough money
and if we are sending support payments over there, it is due to
good will and certainly not a duty or a must. I gladly do what
is necessary, since Amalie can not make do with what she has on
her own, and I gladly give 200 marks etc. per year for this; letters
the likes of Ferdinand's, however, can give reason to stop us
from sending anything.
Hopefully, you will receive the entire 10 dollars, and they find
you all in good health and before Christmas; everybody here is
currently healthy, I myself have been ill quite often lately,
and had to spend four weeks this fall in Carlsbad; my wife is
not well either, but I hope this will not be of any consequence,
it's probably just in the years.
Due to great losses, Hugo is really no longer in a position to
give much support, and his family is large, and none of them married;
other than that everybody in Treptow is healthy.
Let us know when you have received the money, and let you and
your family be cordially greeted by
Your brother-in-law
Carl Friederici.
