Phases of the Mentoring Relationship

Phase 3: Enabling
The relationship focuses on developing the mentee.

  • The mentoring partners plan activities and discussions based on mentee needs and goals, continue to have discussions and plan activities as needs arise or simply to follow-up.
  • The mentee develops skills and knowledge to do the job, develops confidence, networks with peers, and develops a relationship with the mentor that may last for years to come.

Phase 4: Redefining the Relationship
Mentoring, like all relationships, evolves over time.

  • The partners recognize that as the mentee becomes comfortable in the role of instructional specialist, the relationship will change.
  • Together, the mentor and protégé redefine the relationship, or celebrate their success and bring mentoring to an end.
