Web Design Basics for UMBC Freshmen: Glossary of TermsDomain Name - Part of the URL address of a Web page. In the United States , the domain name can end in .com (for businesses); .edu (for educational institution); or .org (for nonprofit organizations) Download - transferring data (usually a file) from another computer to the computer you are using. FTP (File Transfer protocol) - a common method of moving files between two Internet locations. FTP is also a way to log in to an Internet site for the purpose of sending and retrieving files. Home Page - this term refers to the main web page for a business, organization, person, or simply the main page out of a collection of web pages. HTML Tags - brief formatting commands placed within brackets in the text of an HTML file. For instance <bold> tag tells the Web browser to display the forthcoming text in bold type. Internet – when you connect 2 or more network together, the Internet is created. A system of servers connected to intercommunicate and share data. Link - a connection between two documents on the Web, usually specified by an anchor in an HTML document. Network – any time you connect 2 or more computers together so that they can share resources, you have a computer network. Server - a computer source providing data storage and maintenance services. Web page - a document published on a Web server with HTML tags, including hypertext links, and usually includes graphics. Website - a collection Web pages that share a common theme and purpose. Web Browser - a software program that allows a user to view data via the Internet.
