ART375 - Photographic Processes of Printmaking

PROJECT #3
Photo Intaglio

In this project, you will again be using the photo polymer plates and work with high contrast images as you have done in the two previous projects.

The polymer plates are basically the same ones you have already used, but these plates will have a steel backing in place of the sticky plastic backs.

The emulsion side of the plates works the same as the previous plates , with a few exceptions so read the tech paper on photo intaglio and plate processing, and take notes in the demo.

This project and process is completely different than the two previous print processes’. You will be printing from the incised or recesses of the plate. Just the exact opposite of the relief process you just finished.

Each plate must be re-inked every time you pull a print.

The print edition is 10 prints exactly the same. All the prints must be on the same paper and must be the same size and placement. This will be an edition.
It must be done on quality rag print paper. ¼sheet standard size print. One print per ¼ sheet.

Your image should have some nice breathing room on all the borders.
The Image or subject matter can still remain the letters and numbers if you wish or you can now branch out and work with other imagery.

The images should have some rich blacks and a nice range of grays. You will need to have at least two colors in the prints. One of the colors will be the black key the other can be oi your choice.
The color of the paper is not considered one of the colors.

You can use one of the following way to add the second color to your prints

  1. Using any one of the two previous processes to put color in your images
  2.  Hand coloring:  but it must be consistent though out the edition
  3. Chine-collé
