SPAN 201 Intermediate Spanish I
A continuation of SPAN 101 and 102 with an increased emphasis on reading, writing and cultural knowledge.

MLL 470/670 L2 Aquisistion and Learning: Theory to Practice
This course examines issues in second-language acquisition and learning from the perspective of teaching and learning in ESOL and foreign-language classrooms. Topics covered include a review of past and current learning theories, an exploration of the range of factors (physicological, cognitive, affective, environmental) affecting first- and second-language acquisition, the role of input and output in second-language development, the role of learning styles and strategies in language learning, and language processing in reading and listening. These topics will be explored through readings,class discussions, and various individual and collaborative projects and assignments.

SPAN 101- 102 Elementary Spanish I and II
An introduction to Spanish based on real-life situations. Comprehension and basic speaking skills are emphasized. Some reading and writing is required, as well as an introduction to various aspects of Hispanic societies.

SPAN 103 Intensive review of Elementary Spanish
Designed for students who have completed level III in high school and who, nevertheless, are unprepared for SPAN 201 either as a result of an interruption of at least five years since their study of the language or as a result of a weak language background. This course offers an intensive review of Elementary Spanish I and II as an opportunity to improve the student’s listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

SPAN 202 Intermediate Spanish II
A content-based language course dealing with current topics related to the Hispanic world. Topics may include ecology, politics and government, education, science, health and nutrition, economics, culture and geography. There is a n emphasis on reading and listening comprehension of authentic printed materials and videos and in-class oral discussions. A review of selected grammar is woven into the course activities.

SPAN 400 Special projects
This course is open to students with special  projects on application to the instructor who will supervise  the particular project. Projects conducted in this class include curriculum development, standardization of the use of technology in the SPAN 101-201 sequence and material development for the Spanish lower classes.

SPAN 401/601 Studies in Spanish Language
This course is designed to advance training in oral and written communication in Spanish. In this class, students learn to become better readers, better analyst of Spanish texts, and better writers. In the class, students read and discuss readings (topic, genre, cultural implications) that will be the basis for their individual or collaborative writings. While students work in writing in different genres (e.g. description, narration, argumentation, etc), the class places a special emphasis on academic writing.

LLC 890 Research Proposal Seminar
This course is designed to familiarize students with the dissertation research proposal writing stage and the dissertation research process. The major objectives are to demystify the components and stages of the dissertation writing process, to evaluate social science dissertations in particular and social science research in general, and to facilitate the design and realization of your own manageable dissertation proposal
