#12 Left: Amalies older sister Mathilde Jahn Birkholz, probably taken in the early 1860's, city unknown. Soon after this photo, Mathilde died.

#23 Right: The four children of Mathilde and Eugene Birkholz. Amalie was a few years older than these children but was raised by their father since she was 11 years old, therefore the Birkholz children were more like step siblings to Amalie, rather than nieces and nephews. They may have all been raised in the same house that was auctioned in 1864. Eugene Birkholz son Eugene (the oldest) would later marry a woman named Lily and they would have a family and a hard working life in Milwaukee Wisconsin, while their brother Emil would live in Berlin, the other two children's fate is unknown. Read the letter where young Eugene is delighted to hear from Amalie.

These two pictures were probably taken the same day. Notice that the same pedestal prop on the left is used in both photos.
