Gendarmenmarkt

Friedrick the Great lead Berlin into the era of the Enlightenment which would build a world class opera, a cathedral for the cities Catholics, the Gendarmenmarkt and the Brandenburg Gate. In 1708 Neue Kirche was built on this square to serve the dominent Lutherin population. The Gendarmenmarkt also includes the French Reformed Church (Huegonots) to serve the French Protestants residing in the community since the early 18th c., and the Schauspielhaus housing world class concerts and designed by the Berlin architect Karl Schinkel in the 19thc.

The 19th c. Gendarmenmarkt was where urban locals could buy their agricultural needs, gather for entertainment, and use their church as a center for social engagement and worship.

 


NeueKirche interior 1886.

 

During WWII NeueKirche was heavely bombed, but was renovated in the 1980's. A few original statues remain. It has been renamed Deutcher Dom and is a Berlin History Museum.
