Quoted in the Huffington Post on PRISM
estimated reading time: 1 minute and 3 seconds.
I was recently quoted in an article by Ben Hallman, Timothy Stenovec, and Gerry Smith in the Huffington Post regarding the revelations by The Guardian and The Washington Post about the NSA’s PRISM program. Quite a bit has happened in the last week or so, and given the tight deadlines for publication, I’m pretty pleased with how the article turned out.
Update: July 8, 2013
It’s been quite a month in the security and privacy community. I remain impressed with the overall quality of reporting on this issue. However, I am concerned that this story remains a bit one-sided. The NSA, and similar organizations in other countries, have legitimate reasons for existing. Of course, there are clearly boundaries that must not be crossed. Ideally, we would have a genuine back and forth public debate about where those boundaries are and where they should be, but after a month of reporting, I’m not sure we’re doing that. Tomorrow’s meeting of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board is another opportunity. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens, particularly on the first panel. It looks like they have a nice mix of people and perspectives. Here’s to hoping they post a video or transcript (or both)…
