Advice from Other Academics

estimated reading time: 0 minutes and 52 seconds.

I’m not the only academic on the planet, and all of the advice on my website is just my own take on things. Others may have a different view. This is one attempt to collect some of the pages that I’ve read and liked, nothing more. I’m not going to collect the overwhelming, definitive set of academic advice that Tao Xie has collected. That’s not my goal. Instead, I will simply keep at most ten resources I happen to like from other academics.

  1. Annie Antón’s Guidelines for Graduate Students

  2. Eugene Spafford’s What is a Ph.D. Dissertation?

  3. Ron Azuma’s Guide to Surviving Computer Science Grad School and his So long, and thanks for the Ph.D.!

  4. Munindar Singh’s Advice for Advisees

  5. Marie desJardin’s How to Succeed in Graduate School

  6. Susan Finger’s Advice on Writing Proposals to the National Science Foundation

  7. Mark Dredze and Hanna Wallach’s How to Be a Successful PhD Student (PDF)
