Swapnil's project

This project talks about the stress related responses in microbial cell culture. It can be seen that the author spent a lot of time to study about this field and get materials about this topic. It gave us some new knowledge.

In the project, the author talked about how the organisms respond to situations which  individual  cells  perceive as some kind  of  stress. One of  their protective mechanisms is the  stress response, normally  characterized  by the  extremely  rapid increased  expression  of  a selected  group of proteins, called  stress  proteins, after a  sudden change  in the  normal cellular   growth conditions.

Then the author talked about heat shock response, its cellular mechanism, classification basis of heat short proteins. Through two classical examples of heat shock response(E. Coli and yeast), we got better understand about heat shock response.

As another example of stress response the author introduced the oxidative stress response, sites of activated oxygen production, cellular mechanism in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

Nutrition starvation is a very common phenomenon in microorganism's  day to day life. One of the response is that the organism may adapt to alternative source, lac operon is a classic example of this response. Another response is superbio-remediation. Finally, antibiotics are produced by some organisms to kill other organisms in competition for the available nutrients to survive.

Finally, the author indicated that stress proteins has a variety clinical applications. Understanding of the fundamentals and their importance will definitely lead us to a new dimension where many problems related to stress in human body can also be cured.

All together, this project is logic, systematic and well organized. Definitely, it is a very good term paper. The background is simple but beautiful, not fancy and make the readers feel very comfortable.

One shortcoming is that this project looks like a term paper indeed, but not a web site based project. Few links are included in the project. That may because this field is a relatively one. There are not a lot of materials on the web.

Some spelling mistakes are noticed in this project. Of course, this is inevitable because the time is limited.

What I also want to mention is that some abbreviations used in this project are not explained. For example, in http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~sbharg1/ENCH772/paradn.html, the author writes: "in addition,   recovery  from  anoxia,  wounding  and  several viral   infections are  also  associated  with induction  of  Hsps." The author never said what is Hsp, although we can know that it means "heat shock protein".  In http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~sbharg1/ENCH772/adapt.html  several links are given: [ FREE BANNER MAKER | FREE WEB SPACE | FREE WEB TOOLS ], but it seems that they have nothing with this project. Maybe the author just want them to entertain the reads.

All in all, this is a success project. We are sure that not only we, but also the author, learned a lot from this project. Here I want to thank the author for all his effort to make this web site to be available to all of us.
