Methods of Continuous Cultivation

Several different types of continuous fermentation procedures have been developed over the years to study various aspects of the metabolism of microorganisms. The more popular of these types include:

Chemostat: The chemostat is the most simple and popular method. it is based on nutrient limitation. In chemostat fermentation, the nutrient is fed at constant rate.

Turbidostat:  In turbidostats, addition of medium to the fermenter vessel is triggered when the turbidity (and therefore the biomass) of the culture attains a certain value.

Nutristat, or auxostat: In auxostat, the nutrient feed is based on feedback control of a nutrient concentration or to hold a factor constant (e.g., pH).
