Several different types of continuous fermentation procedures have been developed over the years to study various aspects of the metabolism of microorganisms. The more popular of these types include:
Chemostat: The chemostat is the most simple and popular method. it is based on nutrient limitation. In chemostat fermentation, the nutrient is fed at constant rate.
Turbidostat: In turbidostats, addition of medium to the fermenter vessel is triggered when the turbidity (and therefore the biomass) of the culture attains a certain value.
Nutristat,
or auxostat: In auxostat, the nutrient feed is based on feedback control
of a nutrient concentration or to hold a factor constant (e.g., pH).
