Assessment of stream restoration impacts on urban sediment load and comparison with TMDL guidelines

ABSTRACT

This project investigates the impacts of stream restoration on urban-watershed sediment export.   Continuous monitoring of streamflow and turbidity will be conducted in a 1.6-sq-km headwater tributary watershed of Dead Run in Baltimore County MD before and after stream restoration. Stormflow and baseflow suspended-sediment samples will be used to calibrate turbidity-concentration relationships.  Sediment loads for the restored stream will be calculated and compared to predicted load reductions in EPA-approved guidelines and to headwater streams not undergoing restoration.  Data will also be collected at downstream sites to assess whether changes in sediment load can be detected at increasing watershed scale.
