Throbbing Gristle - In The Shadow Of The Sun

Mute TGCD 9 [UK]
Total Running Time: 56 min 51 sec

  1. In The Shadow Of The Sun (56.51)
In The Shadow Of The Sun was Throbbing Gristle's 1981 soundtrack to the film of the same name made by Derek Jarman waaaay back in 1972-74. It was re-released on CD by The Grey Area last Autumn.

So what's it like? Very different from TG's usual fare, very enjoyable, very soundtracky, and about as ambient as Throbbing Gristle ever got. That is to say that, if you were to put this next to some Brian Eno, the TG would still, for the most part, sound like someone throwing a grenade into a studio, but relative to their other work it's very relaxed, quiet and downright pretty in places.

Of course the unfortunate fact that the entire soundtrack is one long track makes it rather difficult to pinpoint the exact location of those places, but the disc as a whole makes for fairly entertaining listening and fulfils the basic purpose of ambient music (ie background music, to add ambience to an environment) admirably, albeit in its own special way (ie typical Eno-esque ambient doesn't occasionally decide to blow your ears clean off your head). Of course, it goes without saying that the ambience this disc adds to your current environment is rather less pleasant than most...

There's not a lot more I can say, really. My usual tendencies to go on endlessly, describing each and every track in excruciating detail, is rather hampered by the fact that this disc has only one track which is rather difficult to describe and also by my current temporary mono hearing (listening to music can be a real pain when only one ear is working).

Erland Rating: +1
