A Short Q & A with
Love/Hate
Joey Gold
by Thomas Huff
May 10, 1996, right around the release
of I'm Not Happy, I was running the Unofficial Love/Hate
Website, and Joey Gold, along with the other guys, were nice enough to make
themselves fairly accessible.
I put together the following Q&A for Joey, and voilà; here is a transcript of our digital conversation.
Hey Thomas. Joey Gold here, my neighbor in Hermosa Beach just
knocked on my door and showed me the new stuff on the L/H web site.
Way cool. Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you.
No problem, I always appreciate it.
Let's get into it with the new album.
Is there going to be a video for Love Me Down?
Possibly-depending on how the single performs.
When is the Love Me Down single coming out?
The single is getting promoted at radio starting this very week.
Will there be anymore singles form I'm Not Happy?
Not sure.
Can you get me a list of Love/Hate videos?
Off the first record- Blackout In The Red Room, Why Do You Think
They Call It Dope? Off the second record- Wasted In America, Happy Hour.
Off the third record- Spinning Wheel. Off the fourth record- nothing yet.
Are you guys going to tour before the next album?
Probably.
Did you guys tour for this one?
We did some touring in Europe, but not much here.
When can we expect the next album?
Soon.
Have you started working on it yet?
Actually, we started it just a few weeks ago. It's coming along great.
Will it be on mayhem again?
Most likely.
In the liner notes of all your albums there's a fan club address.
Do you guys answer personal letters sent there?
That's our fan club address. We don't have a fan club per
se, but everything that comes through there I personally read. In '90 and '91
we had it together and answered everything. Now I answer what I can. At
least I do read whatever comes in.
Where do you guys live now? Do you still live close to each other?
We all used to live in a loft in downtown L.A. When we got our first
deal in '89, we all got pads in Hollywood. Now, Skid lives in Hollywood,
Jizzy lives downtown, Jon lives in the valley, and I live in Hermosa Beach.
What are some of your favorite bands and who are your influences?
Everyone good, from the older bands-Beatles, Stones, Who, Floyd, and Bowie
to the newer bands-Jane's Addiction, Ice Cube, Ministry.
How about the extra track on the Alfa Records pressing of
I'm Not Happy?
I think it's "I Am The Walrus."
What are the names of both extra tracks on Alfa's pressing of Let's
Rumble?
I thought there was only one extra track- "Los Angeles" by X
Are there any non-album tracks floating around out there, other then
"I Am The Snake" and "Castles From Sand?"
Yeah, a few from English releases, like "Tinseltown."
Why did you guys choose mayhem, why did you leave Caliber?
Caliber sucks. They didn't pay us what they owed us, And they
were unable to translate a shitload of "Spinning Wheel" airplay into
sales.
What's up with Darren Housholder?
Not much. I'm sure he's wiggling somewhere.
Did you bring him on as a full-fledged member of Love/Hate or
just a temp?
He was a full member, but it just didn't work out musically.
We thought we'd be able to cure him of his incessant wiggling, but no.
What's he doing now?
Not a clue.
Why didn't Jon E. play on Let's Rumble?
Long story. Basically, after fifteen years of his shit attitude
all but negating his brilliant guitar playing, we had enough. We fired
him and hired Darren (Dagwood, as we call him), but Dag didn't cut it,
and after a year apart, we took a slightly humbled and defanged Jon E Love
back in.
What's with the new dos for Skid and Jizzy?
(referring to the new short hair look)
Me too. Times change, and some choppage was in order.
Could you give me a brief bio of the band.
We all grew up in L.A. Jon, Skid and I went to high school
together. We were in a number of bands. We met Jizzy while we were
in a band called Data Clan. We became Love/Hate in 1986.
I'll look at your homepage more. I think it's way cool that
you've done this. Feel free to ask more questions, anytime.
I'll definitely write back. Thanks again, Thomas.
Joey Gold
I need to give credit where credit is due. Joey Gold is super cool
for talking the time out to do this.
A super big thanks to him.
And last, don't forget to call up or local radio station and request
Love/Hate's new single Love Me Down.
