Problem 3.1b Hint
In part b, define an intermediate temperature, T_m, as the temperature at
the interface between the slabs. The heat flow at this contact point must
be unique - no matter how you calculated it.
Problem 3.6 Hint
Assume no breeze is blowing - what does this imply about convection? Estimate
alpha as 0.9. Why don't you need to know the size of the space ship?
New Hint - due to the somewhat confusing language of Example 3.1, "still
air" in convection I will just state that you should use heat flow by only
radiation and conduction in this problem.
Problem 3.7 Hint
As I mentioned in class, use the simple solid equation of state for water.
Problem 3.13 Hint
This is a long problem!
Problem 3.15 Hint
Use the matlab function fzero to do the numerical part of this problem. Type
"help fzero" for instructions.
You will need to write a Matlab function to solve this problem. Type "help
function" to see the syntax for Matlab user-defined functions. You must
save your function definition to a file ending in .m in the directory you
are running Matlab in.
