We have identified several themes that should be emphasized in determining
our future investments in ITT at UMBC. With limited resources, we should be
careful to emphasize investments that will have the greatest return,
especially in high priority areas.
The following items should help guide the implementation of ITT at UMBC:
- UMBC can leverage ITT at lower costs than many campuses
because of its small geographic size, and excellent physical
infrastructure for wiring compared to older campuses.
- Fulfilling UMBC's mission as the Baltimore area UM campus stressing
science, technology, and public policy will require a strong ITT
infrastructure.
- Many ITT intensive businesses and government agencies exist in
the Baltimore--Washington corridor, especially in the fields of
science and engineering. Our efforts in ITT should enhance our
capabilities to interact with these institutions and supply them
with a well educated workforce that knows how to use ITT technologies
to the fullest extent.
- Faculty involved in sponsored research must produce results in
an increasingly competitive environment. Information technologies
are one of the few ways that UMBC can give their faculty a
competitive edge for relatively few dollars when compared to
other, less generic technologies. We should enable researchers to
work more productively, as well as give them access to advanced
ITT resources that give them a competitive edge.
