Removing PCB Toxins in
the Chesapeake Bay
Sheilah discusses a
microbe that has the
potential to break down
the toxic class of
compounds called PCB’s
(polychlorinated
biphenyls). The
compounds, which are
highly stable and still
difficult to remove,
were banned in
manufacturing industries
in the 1970’s, by the
U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency. She
is joined by Professor
Kevin Sowers, Ph.D., at
the Center for Marine
Biotechnology, part of
the University of
Maryland’s Biotechnology
Institute; and Richard
Eskin, Ph.D., Director
of the Science Services
Administration at the
Maryland Department of
the Environment (MDE).
