Maryland Morning

Maryland Morning with Sheilah Kast is a lively mix of interviews about news, the arts, politics, science, history - all the topics and people that make Maryland such an interesting place to live and work. From 9 to 10 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday - and soon, every weekday - we reach from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains for compelling conversations with people who make the news, and with people who cover it - including WYPR's own reporters. Maryland Morning is produced by Aimee Pohl & Jennifer Chang.

Removing PCB Toxins in the Chesapeake Bay

Sheilah discusses a microbe that has the potential to break down the toxic class of compounds called PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyls). The compounds, which are highly stable and still difficult to remove, were banned in manufacturing industries in the 1970’s, by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. She is joined by Professor Kevin Sowers, Ph.D., at the Center for Marine Biotechnology, part of the University of Maryland’s Biotechnology Institute; and Richard Eskin, Ph.D., Director of the Science Services Administration at the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).
