STARS FEATURES

REGISTRATION FUNCTIONS MENU

This area is where you will likely spend most of your time with STARS, and includes:

Add/Drop: This feature is used for registration, add/drop, changing a grade method, placing your name on a hold list, and checking open sections of courses. See the STARS Worksheet and directions for using STARS to register.

Check Registration Eligibility: This feature will allow you to check for any blocks on registration, such as financial holds.

Check Registration Appointment Time: Use this feature to find out the earliest time you may register for the following semester.

REVIEW YOUR CLASS SCHEDULE

Lists all courses for which you are currently registered, including meeting time and locations. Will also provide a listing of courses for which you are on the hold list.

REVIEW YOUR GRADES

Provides semester grades as soon as they are available. Will also list semester and cumulative grade point averages once grade processing is complete.

PIN CHANGE

Initially, your PIN will be your birthday month and day (MMDD). You will be required to change your PIN the first time you use STARS. When selecting a new PIN, do not use part of your Social Security Number or your telephone number--use a number that cannot be easily identified with you in any way. (Note: your EASI PIN may also be used with STARS.)

Please note: Use of the PIN is designed to provide security against any unauthorized access to your records and is considered the same as your signature when processing transactions. Do not give it to anyone. You will be held responsible for all transactions using your PIN.

CALLING STARS

Registration and add/drop with STARS is easy and convenient. A touchtone telephone is required to use STARS. STARS uses the telephone key pad to send your course requests to the computer. The STARS Worksheet will help you through the process.

Each transaction will require an Action Code, Schedule Number, and # (pound sign). After entering all of your courses, press # again to send your requests to the computer. Action Codes tell the computer whether you want to add, drop, change a grade method, etc. Each section of a course has a unique four digit Schedule Number which appears in brackets [****] to the left of the section number. For some courses, such as an independent study, you will need to contact the department offering the class for the Schedule Number.

STARS TERMS

Action Code: Single digit number which indicates the type of transaction you wish to process: add, drop, change grade method, access hold list, etc.

Academic Advising: Advising is still mandatory for all degree-seeking undergraduates, and your department will give you clearance to register electronically. You will not be able to register until this clearance is given.

Cancellation/Withdrawal: For students who wish to cancel their registration prior to the start of the semester, or withdraw from classes once the semester has begun.

Disconnection from STARS: There are time limits built into the system. If you are on STARS for an extended period of time you will be disconnected. You may immediately call STARS back. It is recommended that you review your schedule to verify previous transactions.

Dropping Courses: When dropping one course to register for another course, it is recommended that you check open sections to be sure the course is available. Once a closed course has been dropped, you will need electronic permission from the instructor to reregister for the course.

Electronic Permission: Permission required ("permreq") courses and closed course permissions will be given electronically by faculty and the departments. If you need permission for any courses, contact the department sponsoring the course. Permission slips will no longer be used for registration.

Grade Method: You may take a course for a regular grade (A-F), pass/fail, or audit. The automatic default for most courses is the regular option, and all grade methods are not available for all courses. Undergraduate and graduate students should refer to their respective catalogs for restrictions on grade method options.

Registration Blocks: Holds, such as financial or academic, may be placed on your record which will prevent you from registering for a particular term. You will need to contact the appropriate office for an electronic clearance to register:

Academic Ineligibility
or Enrollment Status : Undergraduate Admissions 455-2291
                                Graduate Admissions 455-2537
Financial Ineligibility : Student Accounts Receivable	455-2288
Judicial Ineligibility :	Student Affairs 455-2393
Administrative Ineligibility :	Registrar's Office 455-3158

PIN - Personal Identification Number: Initially your PIN will be your birthday month and day (MMDD). You must use a zero with the month and/or day if either is a single digit. For example, if your birthday is July 4, your initial PIN will be 0704. When you use STARS for the first time, you will be required to change your PIN to another four digit number.

Schedule Number: Each section of a course is assigned a specific four digit schedule number. This number is surrounded by brackets [****] and is located to the left of the section number. Schedule numbers for independent study courses must be obtained from the department offering the course.

Silence during Processing: There may be periods of silence during your call to STARS. This is normal and will occur as the computer processes your requests. Do NOT hang up.
