The
televisions are tuned to local Baltimore television stations. In
addition, the recorded sounds of black flies swarming around carrion
form the aural subtext. The use of the word "totem" in
the title is an inversion of its reference to a founder ancestor
or guardian. Earth no longer rides on the World Turtle's back, but
sits on the world landfill facing its clone, manufactured by a technology
ultimately programmed to create waste.
