Welcome to the website of EDLab at UMBC!

 

ED stands for Eenergy harvesting and Design optimization.

 

EDLab conducts researches on:

 

- Vibrational energy harvesting (piezoelectric, electromagnetic) and

- Design optimization methodologies (topology optimization, reliability design under uncertainty).

01.2017:

Chris successfully defended his master thesis. Congratulations!

Thesis title: Design Optimization of an Electromagnetic Energy Harvester Backpack for Utilization of Human Walking Energy

12.2016:

Dr. Lee visited NIST to give a talk on energy harvesting and additive manufacturing, and discuss research collaboration.

11.2016:

Dr. Lee invited Dr. Jamie Guest from Johns Hopkins University who spoke on "Topology Optimization for the Design of Manufacturable, High Performance ‘Structures’" under the support of Eminent Scholar Mentoring Program.

09.2016:

Dr. Lee awarded Supplement for Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) and supports Mr. Tobi Tunde-Alli's nonlinear vibration energy harvesting research.  

09.2016:

Mr. Nezami presented his research entitled "Improving Durability of a Vibration Energy Harvester Using Structural Design Optimization" at ASME SMASIS 2016 (Stowe, VT).

Mr. Mullen presented his research entitled "Optimization of an Electromagnetic Energy Harvesting Backpack under Actual Walking and Running Scenarios" at ASME SMASIS 2016 (Stowe, VT).

 

08.2016:

Dr. Lee lectured one week summer camp "Powered Up: Re-Purposing Energy with an Energy Harvester" in UMBC SEE 2016 program. Click "Outreach" menu to see details.

08.2016:

Mr. Myung Kyun Sung joined EDLab.

07.2016:

Dr. Lee visited Carderock Naval Surface Warfare Center to discuss research collaborations in additive manufacturing (Link).

06.2016:

Dr. Lee awarded UMB-UMBC Research & Innovation Partnership Seed Grant for his collaborative research with UMB school of dentistry (CoPI: Dr. M. A. Melo) on "A biocompatible and implantable dental energy-harvesting prototype for a self-powering brain stimulator."  

05.2016:

New paper published in Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization: "Topology Optimization based on Morphing Mesh for Simultaneous Component Relocation and Frame Structure Design."

04.2016:

Vineed and Trevor successfully presented their researches in UMBC URCAD 2016.

04.2016:

Chris and Amin presented their researches at SAMPE B/W University Research Symposium (UMCP, MD) and won 2nd (poster) and 4th (oral presentation) place prizes. Congrats!

 

03.2016:

Amin presented his research entitled "Parameter Study and Optimization for Piezoelectric Energy Harvester for TPMS Considering Speed Variation" at SPIE SS/NDE 2016 (Las Vegas, NV). Kabir's undergraduate research work has been also presented by Dr. Lee, entitled "Mechanical Motion Conversion from Reciprocating Translation to One-Directional Rotation for Effective Energy Harvesting"  

02.2016:

Chris won the first place prize in 11th PROMISE Research Symposium and Professional Development Conference (UMCP, MD). His work is entitled "Optimization of an Electromagnetic Energy harvester." Congrats!

02.2016:

Dr. Lee awarded UMBC COEIT Strategic Plan Implementation Grant (PI: Dr. M Younis) for his collaborative research on "Prototype Development for a Networked Multi-Modal Sensor System for Autonomous Non-intrusive and Self-sustaining Pipeline Monitoring"  

02.2016:

Saman Nezami passed his Ph.D. qualifying exam. Congratulations, Saman!

01.2016:

Dr. Lee presented his research entitled "A New Topology Optimization Method for Simultaneous Design of Component Layout and Frame Structure of Aircraft Wing" at AIAA SciTech 2016 (San Diego, CA).

01.2016:

Chris extended his internship at US Army CERDEC and sponsored by ORISE funding.

02.2016:

Mr. Richard Fan joined EDLab.

09.2015:

Dr. Lee presented his research entitled "Reliability-Based Design Optimization for Nonlinear Energy Harvesters and Experimental Validation" at ASME SMASIS 2015 (Colorado Springs, CO).

08.2015:

Saman was nominated as an outstanding TA from ME department and served on college-specific panels for the Teaching and Learning Workshop.

Dr. Lee elected as an ASME Technical Committee Member (Adaptive Structures & Material Systems Group).

Vineed Dayal and Lena Shalaby awarded Undergraduate Research Award (URA). Review their abstract, introduced as Interesting Mechanical Engineering student research, HERE. Dr. Lee will advise their energy harvesting research.
