UMBC ESOL/BILINGUAL M.A. PROGRAM NEWSLETTER

FALL 2001

(Continued from page 3)

Diane Merriam (Su '98) has returned from Japan and is now doing adjunct ESL work for area community colleges.  She is also maintaining her contact with the Maryland Sister States Program, which sponsored her two-year position in Japan.

Ryan Monroe (S '84) is teaching at Silver Spring International Middle School, a public school in Montgomery County.  At the school, there are Spanish and French Immersion Programs, as well as nearly 100 English learners.

Patience Montgomery (S '97) is teaching grades 6 and 7 English and ESL at Bonn International School in Germany.

Congratulations to
Teresa Eun-Hon Ryu (S '01) who was married to John Kai-Yan Lai on July 14, 2001!
Joan Shin (S '99) and Mary Miller (Su '00) are teaching at the Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, Korea, in the graduate level ESOL Teacher Training Program.  Joan is the coordinator and Mary is teaching the ESOL Methodology component.

Ethel Swartley (Su '90) is continuing her work at Drexel University as the coordinator of their Global Business English Program.  She is also Chair-Elect for this year's ESOL ESP Interest Section.

Bonnie Sylwester (W '97) recently finished a two year experience as an English Teaching Fellow (English Language Program, Department of State) in Bolivia.

Margarita Ugarte-Caffyn (S '95) is currently the ESOL Department Chairman at Owings Mills High School in Baltimore County.

Jennifer Wood (S '93) (formerly Jennifer Gray) was the Director of ESL services at the Mid-State Literacy Council in State College, PA from May 1998-May 2000.  In August 2000, she returned to the Literacy Council in a new capacity as the MIS Manager.  After 12 years in ESL, she was feeling burned out, and she was interested in following her technology hobby.  She also sits on the PA State Management Team for Data Collection and Management.  The data she manages deals with all sorts of populations--the council administers grants in ESL, Adult Basic Literacy, Family Literacy, Civics & Citizenship, and Workplace Literacy.  For Jennifer, it is the best of both worlds; she can still contribute to ESL, but she is one step removed from some of the things that can cause burnout in education.

Jaewon Yoon (Su '00) is in Korea working for a new satellite broadcasting company for English education.  The position involves managing teachers and developing curriculum.

This is an excerpt from a letter Mary Steggert wrote regarding a job interview this summer.

I was interviewed for Coordinator of the ESL program at Frederick Community College.  The interview consisted of a series of questions and/or scenarios that a committee of five asked me to discuss at some length.  When they asked me to describe any

involvement with administrating an ESL program, I was happy to show them my EDUC 794 project--a complete analysis of ESL at FCC.

They then asked me how I'd go about dealing with faculty that know very little about working with international students.  At that point, I whipped out the training manual I completed for MLL 625--

a day of professional diversity training geared specifically for FCC faculty and staff.

Mary is now the Coordinator of ESL at Frederick Community College and reports that the students are "incredibly wonderful."
