Math 481, Project 2
Detecting Art Forgeries

Due Monday March 8

Read proj2-outline.pdf. It contains instructions in an outline format for this case study.

The differential equations in this study are pretty simple and can be solved by hand. You don't need Maple to solve them, but it would be a good idea if you did them in Maple anyway, since that will help make life easier in the future case studies where the use of Maple will be essential.

When done, email me your LaTeX code (*.tex), the bibliography file (*.bib), and figures (*.eps). Be sure to have a look at the problems and pitfalls noted in LaTeX Tips and Tricks before you start your article.

Reference

The bulk of the material for this project comes from Martin Braun's book. See the bibliogaphy section below. Here is the relevant chapter from that book.

Information on the WEB

A Google search for “meegeren, vermeer” turns up quite a few links related to Han van Meegeren and his Vermeer forgeries. Look, for instance, at Van Meegeren's Fake Vermeers, Johannes Vermeer and Han van Meegeren.

An item of interest is the painting Young Woman Seated at the Virginals which was declared a Han van Meegeren forgery during his trial, but now is believed to be authentic and was sold for $30 million in 2004.

Documentary on Vermeer's art

The one-hour video documentary Vermeer: Master of Light, released by the National Gallery of Art, is narrated by Meryl Streep. It starts out slowly—narration begins five minutes into the video—but it's well-made, quite informative, and well worth watching.

Movies on Vermeer

The 2003 movie Girl with a Pearl Earring is a fictionalized account of the events that led to the painting of Girl with a pearl earring. It's a beautiful movie. Watch it if you get the chance.

You may also be interested in the 2019 movie The Last Vermeer which focuses on van Meegeren forgeries of Vermeer. I haven't watched this one.

A diagram

You may wish to download this diagram and include in your article as an aid for explaining the derivation of the model.
