Situational Awareness for Firefighting

Overview

Firefighters can be impacted when performing tasks under the inhospitable conditions often present at the scene of a fire (e.g. thick smoke and loud noise). Our research looks at ways of supporting situational awareness (SA) among firefighters whose visual and auditory channels may be restricted while performing tasks. Our studies have examined ways in which we can design accessible interfaces for firefighters through a participatory approach.

The work is conducted in conjunction with Dr. Dianne Pawluk and her team of researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University. This research was supported through an award from NIST.
