So you want to work in Information Systems?

Employment Opportunities

There are many places to look for jobs so the list below is by no means definitive, this is just a place to start.

Make sure you sign up for the ISJobs email list. To do so go to myUMBC and click on the Personal tab. Go to the My Email section and click on the UMBC mail lists available for subscription. It takes some time to load the list but scroll down to ISJobs and subscribe. The list is archived so you can find the past postings.

Academic Credit Opportunities

There are a number of ways to integrate work and credit hours at UMBC. We have courses IS 399, 400 and 469. See the catalog and the department for more in-depth explanations but briefly:

IS 400 (previously numbered 398) is an Independent Study opportunity. This can be based on undergraduate research or it can use an employment opportunity as the basis for an academic exercise. IS 400 can be taken for 1-3 credits for a grade or for P/F for one or two semesters. Typically my IS 400 students: first have a job or other research opportunity, second they bring me a letter from the employer/supervisor stating that the student may use information from the workplace or organization as material for an academic paper, third they keep a journal, fourth they submit, under my guidance, an academic research paper based upon some aspect of their journal entries. Any IS faculty member is able to supervise an IS 400 course for students. The registration code for Mr. Redding's section is found in the current schedule of classes. http://www.umbc.edu/AboutUMBC/Schedule/  (Usually it is IS 400 0301 but it sometimes changes during Summer/Winter sessions.) http://userpages.umbc.edu/~redding/IS400/IS400.htm

IS 399 is an internship class coordinated through the Shriver Center on campus and the IS department. See the current schedule of classes for the supervising instructor. http://www.umbc.edu/AboutUMBC/Schedule/  Internships are taken for 1-3 credits for one or two semesters as P/F courses only. Also see http://userpages.umbc.edu/~redding/IS399/IS399.htm

IS 469 is a Senior level independent research project coordinated through individual faculty members and has limitations to credits and repeatability.
