The Battle of Iwo Jima was a battle in World War II, where the United States fought to capture a small remote island in the Pacific. This battle was between the United States and Japan. . This battle was one of the deadliest battles in World War II.

The main mission of the United States in invading Iwo Jima was to capture two airfields on the island. This proved to be much more difficult than what was first assumed. The Japanese were very crafty in there fighting style. This fighting style consisted with over 11 miles of hidden tunnels. Branched out from these tunnels were underground bunkers full of heavy artillery.

Before invading the island of Iwo Jima, the United States was far superior to the Japanese in both military arms and troop numbers. The Japanese had a fierce military style of never retreating. Also due to the overwhelming strength in numbers and arms, the Japanese could not provide reinforcement to the 18,000 Japanese troops on the island. Due to this situation, there was no way that the United States could lose this battle. This also led to only 216 Japanese soldiers surviving this battle.

In the invasion of Iwo Jima, there were two actors. These two actors were the United States armed forces and the Japanese armed forces. This invasion was a non-zero game where one of the actors won the island and the other lost the island. This invasion was very tense between the two armed forces. This game of chicken led to the United States pushing forward and the Japanese pushing forward as well. Looking back, I don’t believe either side had a dominant strategy. You could make the case that with much more arms and numbers, the United States would have the dominant strategy. However, with the diverse fighting style of the Japanese, it offset the number of troops and arms. Therefore, the best outcome for both actors would have been to swerve and avoid the other. As we all know, neither side swerved nor retreated and this led to mutual disaster and one of the deadliest battles in World War II.

Overall, this was a very interesting invasion and one that played a major role in the outcome of World War II. This battle was a big blow to the Japanese forces. It also took a lot out of the United States with the rough terrain and difficult fighting style. As you can see in the picture above, the United States proved to take the island in what were very difficult circumstances.
