1.         Districting (to be completed 11/22)

 

2.         Voting Turnout (#22 and #23): read Abramowitz, Chapter 4; Schier, Chapter 3 and pp. 137-144; Franklin [in CD2], skim only)

 

3.         Origins and Evolution of American Party System (#24-26 & #28-29): do all assigned readings (N.R. Miller item is only an outline and is attached) [Presidential Nominations (#35-36) will be incorporated into this discussion: read Abramowitz, Chapter 5, and Dudley and Gitelson, 35-42]

 

4.         Party Organization and Activists (#30-31): topics will in some degree be incorporated into preceding and following topics but all readings (Epstein, McClosky, and Wildavsky) are cancelled

 

5.         Candidate Selection and the Direct Primary (#32-34), do assigned readings in Abramowitz and Dudley and Gitelson, but only skim Hazen [in CD2] to get a sense of how candidate selection differs elsewhere

 

6.         Political Money and Technology (#37-38): not to be covered in class but do assigned readings by Abramowitz, Schier, and Dudley and Gitelson, but Norris reading [in CD2] is cancelled

 

7.         Parties and the Electorate (#39-43): covered in class in so far as time permits, do all assigned readings in Abramowitz but Miller and Niemi reading [in CD2] is cancelled
