The Department of Geography & Environmental Systems at UMBC invites applications for two tenure-track appointments at the rank of ASSISTANT PROFESSOR beginning in August 2000. Ph.D. required; candidates are expected to have an active program of research and publication, ability to attract external funding, and evidence of commitment to teaching excellence. (1) Geographic Information Systems: teaching responsibilities include introductory and advanced GIS, in addition to courses in research specialty. Ability to teach a course on remote sensing applications is also desirable. Research area is open. (2) Environmental Science: we are seeking an individual with strong interdisciplinary background and interests. Areas of research may include some combination of water quality and contaminant transport, watershed modeling, soil-water interactions, landscape ecology/ecosystem modeling, vegetation dynamics, or relationships among physical variables and ecosystem processes in riparian or terrestrial habitats. Experience in utilization of GIS and remote sensing as analytical tools is desirable. Teaching responsibilities include introductory environmental science or physical geography and upper-level courses in area of expertise. This is the first of several new faculty lines anticipated over the next two to three years in connection with a new interdisciplinary environmental degree program.

Environmental research opportunities at UMBC include collaboration with the Baltimore Ecosystem Study, an NSF-funded Urban Long-Term Ecological Research site; the Center for Conservation Research and Technology, whose agenda focuses on development and application of advanced technologies for conservation of biodiversity and habitats; the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology, a research consortium formed by UMBC and NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center; and participation in a new research center focusing on the impacts of landscape transformation associated with urban and suburban development. The campus is located in close proximity to Washington, D.C. and a broad array of federal, state, and local agencies as well as to other research institutions along the Washington-Baltimore-Philadelphia corridor.
