For the next two topics, weathering and soil and sedimentary rocks, (1) read all of chapters 5 and 6, and (2) work through the CD-ROM section on Earth Materials,  part E. Sedimentary Rocks.  You might try your hand at the Rock Review at the end of the Earth Materials section, focusing on the sedimentary as well as the igneous rocks examples.

In T.Rex and the Crater of Doom, Walter Alvarez describes a rock formation known as the Scaglia Rossa, found at a place called Gubbio in Italy.

What kind of rock is this, what is it made of, and what clues does the rock contain that have allowed geologists to reconstruct the environmental conditions associated with its formation? In what kind of geologic environment or under what conditions was this material formed?  How is it different above vs. below the KT boundary and why?
