Going online

Each of you already has a UMBC computer account and you should already know your password.Once you have an account, you can use Netscape with virtually any computer on campus, and with the right kind of modem at home you can also access the Web any time of day or night.  [If you prefer Microsoft Internet Explorer, that's fine. Just don't ask me for advice, because I use Netscape myself and I'm not familiar with Explorer and its features.]

Recent changes in UMBC's web resources have made everything much simpler than it was the last time I taught this class. What you should do to begin with is to access the UMBC home page (http://www.umbc.edu) and go to MyUMBC; with your username, password, Social Security Number and PIN number you can get in and look at your transcript or do any of a large number of other things that are useful.

Although there are other ways to access the online syllabus, I will be running this course through a software program called Blackboard Courseinfo, which manages student data, chat rooms and discussions, assignments, etc. You'll need to register for this using the instructions below. We'll go over this in class as well.

Here are some simple instructions provided by University Computing Services for getting registered:

1. Login to myUMBC

2. Select Academics Tab at the top

3. Select this course (it will be highlighted if a web page has been associated by your instructor, which is in fact the case here). This will take you directly to the Blackboard version of your course, where you will be prompted for a login userid & password.

4. Login into your Blackboard course using your UMBC userid, which appears before the @ symbol in your email address (e.g., rsmith2 is userid for rsmith2@umbc.edu).

5. Your password will be one of the following:

a. SSN, without punctuation, if you've never used UMBC's version of Blackboard

b. Your own password, if you changed it using the Personal Information Editor under Personal Tools on MyBlackboard.

6. If you can't login, contact the OIT Help Desk at helpdesk@umbc.edu or  call x3838 to have it reset.

After you're registered, you can get into the class homepage anytime by going directly to

http://courseinfo.umbc.edu

and simply logging into the course using your username and the password indicated in 5. above.

Once you are attached to the course home page, you can start exploring on your own or in search of materials needed to complete an assignment.
