The Department of Geography & Environmental Systems at UMBC invites applications for a tenure-track faculty appointment in PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY at the rank of ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, beginning in August 2001. Ph.D. required; candidates are expected to have an active program of research and publication, ability to attract external funding, and evidence of commitment to teaching excellence. Preferred specialties include biogeography or some combination of biogeography and soils. Experience in utilization of GIS as an analytical tool is important. Teaching responsibilities include introductory physical geography and upper-level courses in area of expertise.

The UMBC campus is located in close proximity to a broad array of federal, state, and local agencies as well as to other research institutions along the Washington-Baltimore-Philadelphia corridor. Particularly strong opportunities exist on campus for involvement in research on urban ecosystems.
