The Maine Coon cat, also known as the American Longhair, is the largest domestic breed of cat with distinctive physical appearances and extraordinary hunting abilities. Is it specifically native to the state of Maine, making it one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. They are not to be mistaken with other long-haired breeds from overseas introduced in the early 20th century, which threatened the existence of the Maine Coon. Since, however, the Maine Coon has made a comeback and is now one of the most popular and envied breeds in the world.
Male Maine Coons can weigh anywhere from 15 to 25 lbs, while females can weigh anywhere from 10 to 15 lbs. The height can vary between 10 and 16 inches, and can reach a length of up to 48 inches (four feet!). Their fur is long and tapering, which makes them appear even larger. Their heads might even reach the size of a human's.
What makes the breed even more appealing is their above-average intelligence, generally making them easy to train. The Maine Coon is a loyal cat, but cautious among strangers, independent and not clingy. They are also very gentle around other animals and children, and have a curious fascination with water. This is likely due to the fact that their ancestors were aboard ships for most of their lives, often to control the mouse population, and sometimes even for good luck.
