http://research.umbc.edu/~lmoren/academic/syll610.htmlThe introduction to new technologies for studio artists is a complex and exciting task. In order for the highest productivity while maintaining a balance of work that is both thought provoking and objective, Art 610 offers the advanced student orientation to the graduate facilities with the objective pursuing independent research. This graduate foundation course offers brief overviews of procedures and resources to intense demonstrations in a variety of media. This course will nurture the autonomous student's initiation into potential areas of research. Students should leave this course with a confidence to initiate unique projects combining traditional input/output and new media creating original gestures, communication, poetic commentaries, etc.
The first half of the semester will focus on introductory demonstrations, exercises include: basic UNIX commands; File Transfer Protocols; basic HTML; photography and lighting; darkroom; S-Video cameras and sound recording. Digitizing processes include: basic vocabulary bit depth, data rates, etc.; analog and digital video and audio editing, including keying. Output will include CD, CD ROM, video, film recording and print. Projects and critiques will be assigned utilizing a combination of these procedures. Students will be expected to share and demonstrate an area of expertise.
More in depth presentations include experimental video and live audio software developed by STEIM Studios; Interactivity with Director; basic midi and other "out of the box" processes. A final project and critique on an interactive process will be required.
