Subject: patriarchy readings?
Greetings,

I have an undergraduate student working on a documentary theater piece
on fathers, who wants to connect the personal testimonies she's
collecting with some larger political questions. I'm soliciting advice
on readings on patriarchy. I've tried searching the logfiles, but
Patriarch* and father* turn up too many results to be really useful. I
do have the file on "Patriarchy" and its definitions. I can also point
her to Rich's chapter on the Kingdom of the Fathers in Of Woman Born
(for a reading that sees a strong homology between patriarchy in the
family and in the larger culture) and Foucault's comments in The History
of Sexuality critiquing that sort of neat match-up of family and larger
political structures. And I've thought of a few other things:

Hermann & Hirshman's article on Father-Daughter incest in the Signs
Reader
Kimmel, Michael. The Gendered Scoiety. Oxford U Press, 2000.
Esp."The 'Constructed Problems' of Family Life" (on why "fatherlessness"
is not a real problem)
Hartmann, Heidi. "The Unhappy Marriage of Marxism and Feminism" (on
definitions of patriarchy)
Rubin, The Traffic in Women (on definitions of patriarchy)

But other suggestions would be appreciated--on patriarchy, the relation
between male domination in the family and in the state, or the role of
fathers & fatherhood, cross-culturally as well as in the US. Classic
&/or accessible texts would be best. Thanks very much,

Hi

The opening chapter of Ehrenreich and English's book For Her Own Good
has an excellent discussion on the difference between the two
concepts. Gerda Lerner's book on The Origins of Patriarchy is also
excellent. Bette Tallen

Hello,

Carole Pateman has an interesting discussion of patriarchy in her book,
_The Sexual Contract_ (1988), where she addresses an ambiguity inhering in
the traditional definition of the term (rule of the father) and the way in
which it is often employed in everyday speech (rule of men over women).
