Internet News: ENGL348
Spring 2000
Here is where I will put newspaper articles and other web material that I think students in ENGL 348 will find especially interesting and/or useful. I'll announce most new updates on the class email list. Many of the pieces I put here will simply link to the original site. In some cases, though, periodicals either charge for retrieving articles after a given amount of time or they restrict reading to subscribers. In order to make articles from these publications available to students in the class but not to people outside UMBC, I will restrict access to these articles (marked with a red asterisk () to people logging in from a UMBC computer or dialing in to a UMBC modem. If you use an external Internet service provider such as Erols, you will have to use what's called a "proxy server." The library has provided clear instructions for setting up a proxy server. Articles without the asterisk should be available to everyone (the New York Times may require that you register, but they don't ask for very personal information). If you find that an article that you want to read is no longer available, please let me know.
I will add new articles as I come upon them. The most recent update was on May 5, 2000 (this date indicates when I added the most recent article, not when the article was published). Articles currently available:
