A class discussion forum or "list," as it is usually called, enables participants to ask questions and exchange thoughts and information with everyone else in the class via e-mail. When you send a message to the list, it is automatically distributed to all the list members. On the ENGL369 list, you can
I realize that many Humanities students may not yet have e-mail accounts, or may not remember how to use the accounts they have. For that reason, I've scheduled one of our first class meetings, Thursday, September 5, to be held in ECS 333 (the Engineering and Computer Science building), where we'll have a session devoted to using e-mail (including class lists) and the World Wide Web. You should be sure that you have an e-mail account, preferably on UMBC 7, 8, or 9, before that session. Any student enrolled at UMBC can get a free e-mail account simply by applying for one in ECS 019 a day ahead of time.
Once you have an e-mail account, you can subscribe to the class list for ENGLISH 369 by logging on to your account ; at the system prompt (% on UMBC 7, 8, and 9; $ on UMBC2), type SUBSCRIBE ENGL369 and then hit the Enter key. Please note that only students enrolled in English 369 may subscribe to the ENGL369 list.
To encourage students to use the class list, I will make it possible to earn extra credit for outstanding participation. Extra credit will also be possible for anyone who constructs an original, relevant web site. I will have more to say about both of these options in class.
