I am actively involved in education policy in Maryland, the UMBC community, and the Howard County community. 

Education Policy in Maryland

 

University System of Maryland Board of Regents (2008-present)

             The Board of Regents is the governing body each of the degree-granting institutions, research centers, and regional higher education centers for the University System of Maryland.  I was appointed by Governor O’Malley to serve as the Student Regent for the 2008-2009 fiscal year.  I also served as one of UMBC’s two student representatives to the USM Student Council from 2006-2008.

Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) (2007-2008)

             The Maryland Higher Education is the governing body leads policy initiatives for all of higher education in Maryland.  I was appointed by Governor O’Malley to serve as the Student Commissioner, one of the twelve voting members of the MHEC governing board, for the 2007-2008 fiscal year.

 

Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) (2005-2007)

             I have worked with the Maryland State Department of Education in a few capacities over the past three years.  I was appointed by Governor Ehrlich to serve in the 2005-2006 school year as the student member of the State Board of Education during my senior year.  During the Summer of 2006, I worked in the Office of Academic Policy as a student intern focusing on a variety of issues facing education in Maryland.  During the Summer of 2007, I again served as an intern and spent much of my time on the High School Assessment Program.

 

University System of Maryland  Student Council (USMSC) (2006-2008)

             I served for two years (2006-2008) as one of UMBC’s two representatives to the University System of Maryland Student Council.  This group advocates for students as part of the shared-governance model of the USM.

Student Government Association (2006-2008)

             I served two years as member of the Student Government Association.  During the 2006-2007 school year, I served as the Assistant Director of Community and Governmental Affairs.  During the 2007-2008 academic year, I worked as the Director.  Additionally, I represented the SGA on the University Academic Conduct Council.

 

The Shriver Center at UMBC (2008)

             The Shriver Center at UMBC serves as a national leader in promoting applied learning, civic engagement, & community-based service delivery programs. Through Center Initiatives, faculty connect their research & teaching to relevant social needs, and students link academic study to professional practice & service to the community.  I am serving as an intern, helping coordinate the Governor’s Summer Internship Program, the Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program, and the Maryland Department of Transportation Fellows Internship Program.

 

Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity (2007-present)

             I was initiated into the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, Eta Phi Chapter in the Spring of 2007.  I also am the chapter’s representative to the UMBC Interfraternity Council Judicial Board.

 

Admissions Ambassador (2007-2008)

             I volunteered for the Office of Admissions on panels and visit days for new students during the 2007-2008 academic year.

 

 

Howard County Community

 

Community Advisory Council to the Board of Education (CAC) (2006-present)

             I am in my third year working with the Community Advisory Council.  I served as the Policy Director for this community group from 2006-2008.  In addition to coordinating all representation on policy committees, I led on-going policy conversations regarding High School Assessments for the group.

             I also have served on various policy review committees.  Specifically:

— Policy 1010 Discimination and Policy 1020 Sexual Harassment

— Policy 3131 Publications/Communications

— Policy 1211, 1221, 11200 Advisory Committees and Public Hearings

— Policy 10200 Student Representation

— Policy 3431 and 3441 Student Discipline, Rights, and Responsibility

— Fundraising Policy

             I also was intimately involved in an effort to attain voting rights for the Student Member of the Board of Education of Howard County since 2005.  In 2007, legislation was passed and signed by Governor O’Malley.

 

Centennial High School (2002-2006)

             I graduated from Centennial in 2006 where I served as SGA President in my junior and senior years.  During high school, I also played football and lacrosse until I suffered career-ending injuries to his back and knees.  I announced home football games for the program from 2004-2007.

 

Substitute Teacher (2006-present)

             I also substitute teach in Howard County Public Schools and Baltimore County Public Schools during my free time.  I teach in middle and high school classrooms, preferring math and social studies courses.

 

Hero’s Lacrosse (1994-present)

             My father, Warren, has directed Hero’s Lacrosse of Howard County since I was a toddler.  After playing in the program for many years, I now volunteers as a coach each summer working with local middle and high school students.
