What is IDS?
IDS, or Intrusion Detection Systems, run in conjunction with firewalls and other security mechanisms to ensure the security of the systems, or to find when those systems have failed.
These systems *DO NOT* take the place of firewalls. They typically can not directly stop an attack on a system, only notify people or other systems about the attack.
- Some IDS systems are more closely tied to security measures, and when notified, the security system will take further action. This can be a problem.
