Recent Activities (1998-2000)
CESDIS coordinated efforts by Florida International University and University
of MAryland Baltimore County to develop proto-type Knowledge Management
applications for Goddard Space Flight Center. In particular, systems
to locate domain experts among Goddard's scientists and engineers were
developed.
Project Coodinator for NASA Cooperative Agreement teams developing information
technologies to facilitate access to NASA's Earth and space science data,
and working toward the new multi-agency Digital Library Initiative 2.
Environmental Legal Information System (ELIS):
K. Kalpakis and S. Hoban (CESDIS), with colleagues from the Center for
International Environmental Law, the Law Library of Congress and the Earth
and Space Data Computing Division of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center,
successfully proposed to the MTPE Earth Science Information Partners 3
program. The proposal is entitled, "Integrating Evironmental and Legal
Information Systems." We propose to identify remote sensing data that may
be applicable to the interpretation and enforcement of environmental laws,
and develop a system for integrating these data with existing on-line databases
of environmental legal information. This work will be an enhancement to
the Global Legal Information Network (GLIN), a joint effort by the Library
of Congress and NASA. We will also develop a model piece of environmental
legislation which incorporates remote sensing data ab initio, to be used
as a teaching tool at the American University and other law schools.
Project Coordinator for the NASA component of the joint NASA/Library of
Congress initiative to place the laws of all countries on-line.
Global Interoperability for Broadband Networks (GIBN)
Applications Coordinator for the GIBN Trans-Pacific
Digital Library Experiment (DLE). The GIBN
provides broadband networking for the G-7
Information Society pilot projects. The DLE will demonstrate
high data-rate connectivity between the United States and Japan with a
suite of digital library applications.
