Scenario for Accessing Oracle on the UMBC network

            Fred is a new UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County) student who recently arrived at the dorm for his first semester at UMBC. He has a new laptop that is already connected to the school’s wireless network but he is unable to access oracle on the school’s network (using Tera Term Pro) like he has been able to do in classes. He connects to the OIT (Office of Information Technology) website and goes to the getting help link. Fred sees the different options available to him and decides to try the knowledge base. He clicks on the link for the knowledge base. The system then prompts him to read the disclaimer and waits for an acknowledgment before proceeding to the next page. He logs into the Wiki using his myUMBC username and password. On the OIT Wiki main page Fred enters a description of his problem in the search box (“Accessing oracle from a laptop on the school network”). The system searches the knowledge base using the words in Fred’s description as keywords, and displays a list of related solutions from the knowledge base in descending order based on their closeness to the description. Fred goes through a few of the results on the list and implements one (“How to access programs on the school network from a PC”). He is now able to access oracle from his laptop.

 

Use Case for accessing Oracle on the UMBC network

Using the myUMBC OIT Wiki/Knowledge base

  1. User accesses the OIT website and chooses the getting help Link
  2. User goes through the options available and chooses the General information Wiki, then the knowledge base (KB) link
  3. System prompts the user to read the disclaimer and waits for an acknowledgement.
  4. User reads the disclaimer and acknowledges.
  5. System displays a list of options that gives the user an opportunity to be identified (i.e student, faculty, staff, visitor)
  6. Based on the answer from 5 above, system displays a user login screen which requires the user to enter his or her myUMBC username and password
  7. User enters the requested information
  8. System displays a personalized OIT Wiki main page which has following options
            a. “edit Wiki”

b. “search Wiki”

  1. User picks the “search Wiki” option
  2. System displays the Wiki search main page which has a search box and an advanced search tab
  3. User types a description of the issue in the search (“Accessing oracle from a laptop on the school network”) and clicks on the search tab.
  4. The system searches the knowledge base using keywords in the description.
  5. The system displays a list of related solutions in descending order, based on closeness to the description.
  6. The user reviews the different solutions on the list by clicking on them individually.
  7. The system displays the details of every link that is selected.
  8. The user chooses a solution (“How to access programs on the school network from a PC”) from the list and implements it.

 

Alternate Uses of the myUMBC OIT Wiki/Knowledge Base

Note: the numbers are from the main use case above; this shows that the steps before the number do not change.

4. If the user decides not to use the knowledge base after reading the disclaimer

4.1 User refuses to acknowledge the disclaimer by choosing “return to OIT getting help” link.

4.2 The system returns the user to the getting help page

8. If the user picks the “edit Wiki” option instead

8.1 System displays the edit Wiki main page that gives the user the options 

a.       “Edit Existing Post”

b.      “Create New Post”

8.2 If user chooses to “Edit Existing Post”

8.3 System displays the Wiki search main page

      8.4 User types a description of the issue in the search and clicks on the search tab.

      8.5 The system searches the knowledge base using keywords in the description.

      8.6 The system displays a list of related solutions in descending order, based on  

              closeness to the description

8.7 The user reviews the different solutions on the list by clicking on them

        individually.

8.8  The system displays the details of every link that is selected.

8.9  The user modifies the solution after locating it from the list and saves the changes8.10 The system returns the user to the list of solutions

8.1 User chooses the “Create New Post” Link

8.2 System displays a form that allows the user to add a new post to the Wiki/KB

8.3 User edits the form and saves the form

8.4 System returns the user to edit Wiki main page

13. If there is no solution in the knowledge base related to the user’s description,

            8.1 The system displays a message prompting the user to modify the search

            8.2 The system returns to the search page after the user acknowledges the

            11.1 The user exits the knowledge base using the “exit Wiki” tab

            11.2 The system returns the user to the getting help page
