37) Multiphonic Portamento Sequences: Etude Exercises


Etude Multiphonic Portamento Sequences is comprised of ascending passages. It is modeled after passages found in Akira Nishimura's Aquatic Aura and Masataka Matsuo's Distraction (1987). Each phrase ends with a single pitch portamento.

One should first practice this etude without the portamenti between multiphonics. The gradual finger movement and embouchure change can be worked on in the following manner – focus first on the top line, then on the bottom line, and finally on the two lines together. Isolate the most difficult legato/portamento connections – after they are mastered, chain them together with other portamenti in the phrase:
