Postodoc opening in PDE-constrained optimization

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Maryland Baltimore County invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Applied Mathematics, beginning Fall 2026. We particularly welcome candidates with research interests in numerical methods for the optimal control of partial differential equations. This is a fixed-term appointment, with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, with an emphasis on computational methods, or a closely related field by the start date. The position includes a reduced teaching load. Applicants should demonstrate expertise in at least two of the following areas: numerical analysis of partial differential equations, optimization, numerical linear algebra, and continuum mechanics. About me

I joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County as an assistant professor in Fall 2006 after completing a two-year postdoctoral appointment in the Optimization and Uncertainty Estimation Department at the Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I received my Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Chicago in 2004, my dissertation being directed by Todd Dupont and Ridgway Scott. My research area is numerical analysis of partial differential equations, with current focus on the following topics:
