TEXTBOOKS:

Mais Oui (manual and lab book) by Thompson

Course description

This is a course in first-year college French.  The objective is to begin development of proficiency in all four language skills: listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing.  You will also learn about the cultures of France and other French-speaking countries.

The entire class will meet to do work based on material in the textbook.  In addition, you will be assigned certain exercices in the workbook to supplement your classroom activities.

The C-hour

The C-hour is an integral part of the 4 credit course. You must register for one of the 101C section listed in the Schedule of classes.

The C-Hour gives you extra practice and will help you develop your listening and speaking skills.

The C-Hour is offered as a self-study, partly online instructional system. You are expected to go to the IMC (International Media Center) to perform your Tell Me More exercises.  You may select to do this during your scheduled C-Hour or on your own time.

Your online activities may be performed at home or in the lab.

The material introduced in the C-hour will appear on course examinations and represent 15 % of the course grade.

The lab

You will also be assigned audio and video exercises from the workbook for each chapter lesson.

Note that self-correction will be provided.  Audio and video materials will also appear on your exams.

You will be graded on a Pass/Fail basis for these assignments. This will represent 10% of your grade.

NOTE:

As stated in the syllabus, at the end of each chapter, all lab exercises (the written exercises assigned daily as homework, the audio exercises listed in the syllabus and the video exercises- most of them already done in class- ) must be turned in on time.

IMPORTANT

GFR Placement

GER Placement

GER students who have attained levels 2 or 3 in High School and have placed themseleves in one course lower than the appropriate placement level will nevertheless have to complete the appropriate requirement for that placement level in order to receive GER credit.

Students enrolled in 101 who have attained level 2 in h.s. must also take 102.
